Distance to Arc

Distance to Arc is the measure of the receiving surface to the arc center. The default value is 18”, which IEEE 1584 considers to be typical for a body (torso) performing maintenance on 600 volt or less systems. Other parts of the body may be closer such as hands or face. On higher voltage systems, work may be performed with insulated tools such as hot sticks. With this calculator, users may select the distances they wish to consider.
