TMOV and iTMOV Varistor Series

The Littelfuse TMOV and iTMOV thermally protected varistors represent a new development in integrated circuit protection. Both versions are comprised of radial leaded MOVs (Metal Oxide Varistors) with an integrated thermally activated element designed to open in the event of overheating due to the abnormal overvoltage, limited current, conditions outlined in UL 1449.

The iTMOV varistor differs from the TMOV varistor by the inclusion of a third party lead for the purpose of indicating that the MOV has been disconnected from the circuit. This lead facilitates connection to monitoring circuitry.
  • The TMOV and iTOMV varistors offer quick thermal response due to the close proximity of the integrated thermal element to the MOV body.
  • The integrated configuration also offers lower inductance than most discrete solutions resulting in improved clamping performance to fast over-voltage transients.
Additionally, TMOV and iTMOV varistors are wave solderable, thus simplifying end product assembly by reducing the expense and rework associated with hand soldering operations.
  • The TMOV and iTMOV varisors are both recognized surge suppression components to UL 1449.
  • The TMOV and iTMOV varistor’s integrated thermal element, in conjunction with appropriate enclosure design, helps facilitate TVSS module compliance to UL 1449 for both cord connected and permanently connected applications.
  • TMOV and iTMOV varistors are compatible for use with industry standard wave-soldering processes or recommended hand-soldering methods.

AN9312 Suppression of Transients in an Automotive Environment

This application note discusses suppression of transients in the automotive environment. The circuit designer must ensure reliable circuit operation in this severe transient environment. The transients on the automobile power supply range from the severe, high energy, transients generated by the alternator/regulator system to the low-level "noise" generated by the ignition system and various accessories.

AN9768 Transient Suppression Devices and Principles

This application note discusses the two major categories of transient suppressors: a) those that attenuate transients, thus preventing their propagation into the sensitive circuit; and b) those that divert transients away from sensitive loads and so limit the residual voltages.

AN9769 An Overview of Electromagnetic and Lightning Induced Voltage Transients

This application note is an overview of the sources and nature of various transient overvoltages, and the problems that may result.

EC608 Considerations for Selecting Littelfuse MOVs and Fuses for Industrial Motor Applications

This application note discusses the first level considerations for applying both Littelfuse Industrial AC Line Metal Oxide Varistors and associated AC line Fuses with a motor protection example.

pdf icon Combining GDTs and MOVs for Surge Protection of AC Power Lines Application Note

This application note illustrates how to design high performance, cost-effective surge protection for equipment connected to AC power lines. The role of gas discharge tube (GDT) surge arresters specifically designed for AC power line protection is also be discussed.
